The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, narrowly avoided a physical confrontation on Sunday after angry party members mobbed him during the APC North-East Forum meeting in Gombe.
The chaos erupted after Comrade Mustapha Salihu, the APC’s National Vice Chairman for the North-East, publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 elections but conspicuously omitted any mention of Vice President Kashim Shettima as a potential running mate. His remarks triggered an immediate uproar, with delegates shouting insults and threatening violence, forcing security personnel to whisk him away.

Ganduje faced similar hostility when he also failed to reference Shettima in his 10-minute address, further infuriating the already agitated crowd. Footage circulating online shows irate youths grabbing and tugging at Ganduje’s blue agbada as security forces hurriedly escorted him out.

The incident highlights growing tensions within the APC, as many northern members suspect President Tinubu may drop Shettima—a fellow Muslim—in favor of a Christian running mate for the 2027 election. While neither Tinubu nor his spokespersons have confirmed such plans, speculation persists that the ruling party may abandon the Muslim-Muslim ticket strategy, which proved polarizing in 2023.
Political analysts suggest the backlash reflects deepening fractures in the APC’s northern base, with Shettima’s allies viewing the omission as a deliberate slight. As the 2027 race heats up, the party faces mounting pressure to address internal divisions or risk further unrest.
