PDP Warns Tinubu: Rig 2027 Election and Face International Repercussions.
A leading voice within Nigeria’s main opposition party has sent a sharp warning to the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the world is watching and that the old ways of manipulating elections will not be tolerated in 2027.
Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a senior member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said any attempt to rig the upcoming presidential election could see those responsible face arrest, even suggesting U.S. President Donald Trump could take action.
“The days of doing things the old way are finished,” Pearse said during an interview on Arise News. He urged those in power to be very careful in the run-up to the next national vote.

He brushed off concerns about the PDP losing governors to other parties, arguing that control of state governments doesn’t guarantee a presidential win. To make his point, he referred to the 2023 election, where the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) did not win in several states where they had sitting governors. He also noted how Peter Obi of the Labour Party won multiple states without the backing of any governor.
According to Pearse, the PDP’s support among ordinary voters remains strong despite some high-profile defections. He gave examples from Delta and Akwa Ibom states, where former PDP governors left the party but could not convince their supporters to follow them. “The people are with the party, not just with one person,” he explained.

He described the PDP as stable and united after its national convention held in Ibadan last November. However, he identified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a major problem, accusing the electoral body of siding with the ruling party and giving legitimacy to members who had been expelled from the PDP.
Pearse concluded with a direct and forceful warning, stating that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk if elections continue to be flawed. He emphasized that the international community is paying close attention.
“If you rig the election the way you normally rig it before, you may have Trump coming to get you in your chambers. You may disappear overnight,” Pearse said. “Everybody has to be careful. This is not the first time it’s happening. The International Criminal Court is there. So, be careful what you do. The way they rig elections in Nigeria, no, it’s not going to happen again. 2027 is going to be different.”
