A truck conveying ammunitions in cartons spilled into a drainage on Sunday at Awka road in Onitsha and spilled the entire contents.

The incident left the residents of the area in shock as they later informed the police of the shocking revelation as was gathered by newsmen.

A witness who was on ground told newsmen that police officers were immediately deployed to the scene and the driver of the truck was arrested.

The witness said the driver of the truck who was seriously wounded due to the accident and was bleeding came out of the truck and made attempts to hide the contents of the cartons.

The source also disclosed that the driver and his assistant who were seriously injured made attempts to gather and hide the content of the truck but time was not on their side due to the arrival of the police operatives.

The source revealed that the assistant driver took his heels on sighting the police police officers, leaving behind the driver who was arrested along side the truck and its contents.

We do not know who is the owner of the truck or the contents and we are all wondering what such amount of ammunitions will be brought to the state, the source added.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra state police command while confirming the incident disclosed that the police had recovered the vehicle and its contents.

Mr Ikenga said that at on 9 May 2021 at about 4 Pm, the police were informed that there was an accident involving a truck along Awka expressway in Onitsha and on receipt of this information, Police officers, military and other security forces rushed to the scene of the accident and quickly cordoned off the area and recovered the truck with its contents.

The PPRO also disclosed that the case has been transferred to state criminal investigation department for further investigations.
