Two Indians Recruited by Russia Killed in Ukraine.
India has reported that two of its nationals, who were recruited by the Russian army, have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Indian Foreign Ministry has requested that Russian authorities repatriate the bodies of the deceased. Additionally, the ministry has urged Moscow to promptly release and return all Indian nationals serving in the Russian army. Moscow has yet to respond to these requests.
Reports indicate that dozens of Indians have been lured by agents into fighting for Russian forces with promises of money and Russian citizenship. The BBC has interviewed some of these individuals, revealing that some were coerced into combat roles, while others enlisted voluntarily.
“We regret to state that two Indian nationals who had been recruited by the Russian Army have recently been killed in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” stated the foreign ministry, without naming the victims.
The ministry has also advised Indian nationals to exercise caution when seeking employment opportunities in Russia. In May, Indian police arrested four individuals allegedly involved in a human trafficking network that lured young men to Russia with promises of jobs or education, only to force them into fighting in Ukraine.
Earlier this year, at least two other Indians died while fighting for Russian forces. Despite urging Russia to return Indian nationals serving in its army, India has refrained from condemning the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, instead calling for both sides to seek peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
Similarly, Nepal and Sri Lanka have warned their citizens against being deceived by human traffickers’ false promises. Reports have emerged that hundreds of their nationals are participating in the war as mercenaries. Kathmandu has reported that at least 20 Nepalese have died fighting for Russia. Additionally, at least 16 former Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed in the conflict, most of them fighting for the Russian army.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry discussed the issue with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Monday. The Sri Lankan ministry stated that an agreement was reached to cease further recruitment from Sri Lanka.
