US Shun Buhari’s Request, Says It Won’t Relocate Africa Command To Nigeria Or Any African Country.
Despite the deteriorating state of insecurity in the region, the US has stated that it has no plans to move its Africa Command from its current base in Germany to Nigeria or any other part of Africa.
The response came only two weeks after Nigeria’s President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), urged the US government to consider relocating AFRICOM to Africa to help Nigeria and other neighboring countries fight insurgency, banditry, and other security crises.

On April 27, the President requested a virtual meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Africa Command (AFRICOM) is the US military headquarters in Germany that oversees the country’ s operations in Africa.
Buhari’s request came after a string of recent military losses in Nigeria’s decade-long war against Boko Haram terrorists, a new extension of the insurgents’ bases into Niger and Nasarawa States, and a wave of kidnappings and killings by bandits in the north.
” The security challenges in Nigeria remain of great concern to us, and are exacerbated by the complex negative pressures that exist in the Sahel, Central, and West Africa, as well as the Lake Chad Region, ” President Buhari said.
” In light of the growing security problems in West and Central Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, the Lake Chad region, and the Sahel, which are all weighing heavily on Africa, the US should consider relocating AFRICOM headquarters from Stuttgart, Germany to Africa and close to the Theater of Operations, ” Buhari added.
The United States Government, on the other hand, ruled out moving AFRICOM from its current base in Germany to Nigeria or any other African country.
Previous studies have shown that relocating AFRICOM From Germany to Africa would be extremely costly, according to the Pentagon of the United States Department of Defense.
The Pentagon said in an emailed response, that while it values Nigeria and other African countries as important partners, the US government does not consider relocating AFRICOM to any part of the continent at this time.
” It would be unethical to make any predictions about future events. However, moving this headquarters (AFRICOM HQ) to Africa is not currently in the works, but ” USAFRICOM’ s commitment to their mission, our African and other partners, remains as high today as it was when we launched this command more than a decade ago, ” according to Ms. Cindi King, a spokesperson for the US Pentagon.

Ms. Cindi King also ruled out any consideration of Buhari’s request in the ongoing US defense analysis.
” Although the Global Posture Review is underway, the relocation of Combatant Command headquarters is beyond the scope of its assessment, ” she said.
Previous studies have concluded that the cost of relocating AFRICOM’ s headquarters is high and that it is likely to detract from other participation opportunities and events that support us more directly.

” The US remains committed to working closely with African countries and organizations to foster peace and stability” , she added.
