World’s First Patient to Receive Pig Kidney Transplant Dies.

Richard “Rick” Slayman, the 62-year-old man who made history by receiving the world’s first pig kidney transplant, has sadly passed away. This news comes just two months after he was discharged from Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent the groundbreaking procedure.

In a statement released at the time of his discharge, Slayman expressed his gratitude to the medical team that cared for him, saying, “This moment – leaving the hospital today with one of the cleanest bills of health I’ve had in a long time – is one I wished would come for many years. Now, it’s a reality and one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Slayman’s transplant was a milestone in xenotransplantation, the transplantation of organs or tissues from one species to another, and offered hope for a potential solution to the worldwide organ shortage. The pig kidney was genetically edited to remove harmful pig genes and add certain human genes to improve its compatibility with humans.

Although Slayman’s death was not linked to the transplant, his family is deeply saddened by his sudden passing. In a statement, they said, “Our family is deeply saddened about the sudden passing of our beloved Rick, but take great comfort knowing he inspired so many.” They also paid tribute to the medical team that cared for him, saying, “Their enormous efforts leading the xenotransplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick, and our memories made during that time will remain in our minds and hearts.”

Massachusetts General Hospital also expressed its condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Rick Slayman. We have no indication that his death was related to his recent transplant. Mr. Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide, and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation.”
