Zookeeper Killed By Lion Was Trying to Rescue Women From the Lion Before the Attack, See Report.

According to reports, Olawuyi intervened in an attempt to rescue a female colleague whom the lion initially attacked. Despite his efforts, the lion turned its aggression towards Olawuyi, leading to his tragic death.

Following the tragic incident at Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, where a nine-year-old lion fatally attacked a veterinary technologist, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, the university authorities have decided to close down the zoological garden on campus.

According to Mr. Wole Odewumi, Chairman of the National Association of Non-Academic Staff of Universities at OAU, the management made the decision to shut down the zoo in response to the unfortunate event.

Odewumi elaborated on the sequence of events, stating, “The deceased intervened to free the woman from the lion. He must have assumed that the lion would recognize him. His intervention to free the woman must have infuriated the animal. The lion left the woman and attacked him squarely.”

Despite efforts to save Olawuyi, including rushing him to the campus health center, he tragically passed away before reaching medical assistance. The female colleague who was also attacked is currently receiving treatment.

A mourning procession was held on campus to honor Olawuyi, and university management has assured that necessary actions will be taken. The zoo remains closed, with the management emphasizing safety concerns.

According to his Curriculum Vitae, Olawuyi, born on December 22nd, 1965, was set to retire in 2025.

In a statement, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed that staff members at the scene attempted to rescue Olawuyi but were unsuccessful as the lion had already mauled him. Subsequently, the lion was euthanized by a security operative.

The tragic incident has left the university community in shock, prompting necessary measures to ensure the safety of staff and visitors in the future.
