Army Reveals 3 Key Reasons Behind Fulani Herdsmen Attacks in Plateau, Over 100 Killed
The Nigerian Army has identified three major factors behind the recent surge in violent attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Plateau State, which left over 100 villagers dead and displaced thousands. The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major General Folusho Oyinlola, cited long-standing grievances, deep-rooted mistrust, and the collapse of leadership structures as the primary drivers of the conflict.
The brutal killings in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas prompted an emergency stakeholders’ meeting at the OPSH headquarters in Jos. According to emergency agencies, the attacks have displaced more than 2,000 people, leaving entire communities in fear.

Addressing community leaders, security officials, and government representatives, Major General Oyinlola described the situation as a tragedy fueled by historical tensions.
“We are gathered today at the headquarters of OPSH in an urgent effort to de-escalate tensions and prevent further bloodshed,” he said. “The current wave of attacks is a tragedy fueled by long-standing grievances, mistrust, and failed leadership.”

The military leader condemned the violence, insisting that no historical dispute warrants such bloodshed.
“We are at a critical point where silence has become complicity, and inaction, dangerous,” he warned. “No grievance, no matter how deep, justifies murder.”
He emphasized that the meeting was not just a formality but a crucial step toward lasting peace.
“This stakeholders’ meeting is not a formality—it is a call to action. Let us talk to one another, not take up arms. Peace is not a favour; it is a necessity for survival.”

Can Dialogue Bring an End to the Violence?
The recurring clashes between herders and farming communities in Plateau have often been linked to disputes over land, resources, and ethnic tensions. However, the military’s latest assessment suggests that failed leadership and a breakdown in conflict resolution mechanisms have worsened the crisis.
