However, recent allegations against member Nick Carter have cast a troubling shadow over the group’s legacy. A lawsuit filed by Laura Penly accuses Carter of sexual assault and misconduct dating back to the mid-2000s, raising difficult questions about accountability, fame, and the darker side of celebrity culture.
The Allegations Against Nick Carter
Penly, now in her late 30s, claims she met Carter in 2004 when she was 19 and that the two engaged in a brief sexual relationship. According to her lawsuit:
- Carter allegedly refused to wear protection despite her requests, assuring her he was free of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- In early 2005, she alleges Carter forced himself on her after she declined sex, ignoring her protests.
- She claims she later contracted HPV (human papillomavirus) and was subsequently diagnosed with cervical cancer, which she attributes to the infection.
- Penly is seeking damages for sexual assault, emotional distress, and negligence.
Penly claims that she met Carter in 2004 when she was 19 years old, and they engaged in a brief s3xual relationship. According to Penly, during their encounters, Carter refused to wear a condom despite her requests, claiming he was “clean” from s3xually transmitted diseases.
Penly further alleges that in early 2005, after she told Carter she didn’t want to have s3x, he forcefully picked her up, threw her onto a bed, and s3xually assaulted her, ignoring her repeated pleas to stop. She claims that Carter did not use a condom during the assault. Penly also states that Carter instructed her to keep the incident a secret, asserting that no one would believe her. Several months later, she says Carter apologized and asked to meet her again.
Penly claims that she contracted several s3xually transmitted diseases, including HPV, from Carter, and was later diagnosed with cervical cancer, which she attributes to the HPV infection. She says that she had to undergo surgery and cancer treatments as a result. Penly is suing Carter for s3xual assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress, and is seeking damages.
Carter’s legal team has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them “baseless and defamatory.” They argue that Penly has a history of financial and legal troubles, including fraud allegations, and suggest her claims are part of a pattern of attempts to exploit celebrities for financial gain.
