A family of six, including three children, was killed on Friday by gunmen in Pantelho, a town in Chiapas, southern Mexico, plagued by cartel-backed militia violence.
Julio Pérez, the mayor of Pantelho, described the incident as “a massacre.” The town has been a battleground for two rival militia groups believed to be supported by drug cartels.

In a brief statement, the state prosecutor’s office announced the arrest of three suspects, though the identities of the victims and detainees have not been disclosed.
This incident is the latest in a series of mass killings in Mexico where hitmen have targeted entire families.
Just days earlier, on Sunday, gunmen stormed a home in Leon, a city in the north-central state of Guanajuato, killing four women and two children.
Both Chiapas, which borders Guatemala, and Guanajuato have experienced violent gang turf wars in recent years.
Local media reported that the gunmen in Guanajuato were searching for a male family member who had fled. In his absence, they killed the women and children.
The Guanajuato killings attracted significant attention due to surveillance footage showing five National Guard officers entering the home five minutes before the attack. The officers were seen leaving with a large black plastic bag shortly before the killers arrived.
