Reports reaching us confirms the passing on of a veteran singer and trumpeter Dr. Abimbola Victor Olaiya.

According to Bimbo Esho, managing director of Evergreen Music Company Ltd who broke the news on Facebook, Dr. Olaiya died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital at exactly 12noon on Wednesday. He was 89.

He was considered the doyen of Highlife music in Nigeria, and the last man standing amongst the creme de la creme of Nigeria’s, and Africa’s, legendary highlife musicians and trumpeters.

In his over 60 years musical career, Dr. Olaiya released numerous tracks to the listening pleasure and admiration of his fans.

He would be remembered for many evergreen musical works, especially tracks such as: Omo pupa, Ilu le o, laba laba, Africa, Incarnation, Iyejemila and many more.

He would be sorely missed by all Highlife music lovers, and followers of African indigenous music.
