Israeli Strike in Tehran Eliminates Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Hamas announced on Wednesday that its political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran, Iran.
Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian. According to Hamas, he died in an Israeli attack on his headquarters in Tehran, which also resulted in the death of a bodyguard.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the incident, stating that Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was hit, leading to his death and that of his bodyguard. The Israeli army has not yet commented on the reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to dismantle Hamas and recover hostages taken during the October 7 attack, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. The attack resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, and the capture of 251 hostages, with 111 still held in Gaza.

Haniyeh, who became head of Hamas’s political bureau in 2017, was a significant figure in Palestinian politics, having previously served as the Palestinian prime minister after Hamas’s 2006 election victory. He lived in exile and frequently traveled on diplomatic missions to countries like Iran and Turkey.
The ongoing conflict has led to substantial casualties, with at least 39,400 reported dead in Gaza according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Iran has expressed strong support for the Palestinian cause but has denied any direct involvement in the recent attacks.
