When a thief is caught, it is expected that the thief would be taken to the police station and then taken to court after a thorough investigation. Sadly, that is not the case most times in Nigeria as Nigerians are quick to resort to jungle justice.

So many people have fallen victim to jungle justice and one of them was a man accused of stealing a phone. This man was bur!nt beyond recognition by an angry mob and the pictures were all over social media.

It was gathered that before the alleged phone thief was molested, he was badly battered and injured, subsequently, after the gang beating, the angry mob finally lit him up and left him for d3@d.

Chi Nwe, a lady who witnessed the horrible incident vehemently criticized the act on her Facebook page, saying;

“Why jungle justice?! This Monday morning at that! Okay, he is a thief; why not take him to the right authorities. I sat by the window and the way vehicles were been directed to a lane at Alaba-rago had me poke my head out to know the cause for this delay. What an eyesore of a human being been burnt to death. The crowd that gathered to witness such amaze me.

No single sane person to do the needful. No single-armed official at the scene to disperse the crowd or prevent this from happening. This young man was just sent to an early grave in a grievous manner.”

Ikenga Tochukwu, Anambra State Police Public Relations said in a statement that;

“The Anambra State Police Command has noted with great concern the increase in cases of mob action in the state by some members of the public who resort to jungle justice whenever they arrest suspects in respect of criminal allegations without recourse to the police for proper investigation.’’

Another set of victims were two alleged robbers who were set on fire by unknown people believed to be an angry mob.

According to a witness account from a man identified as John David, a tricycle driver, he said the incident shook the entire area.

In his words;

“I was at work in the morning when I saw some people gathering at the ECWA staff junction. On getting to the place, I saw two young men lying on the ground dead.  Parts of their heads and necks were burnt. When I enquired what happened, people said they were thieves. But nobody could tell what they stole or the people who set them ablaze.”

Chuwang Paul, another resident in the area said the occurrence was so disturbing and the corpses weren’t removed on time which made the residents of the area feel very unsafe.

ASP Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the incident and said a thorough investigation is being carried out to reveal the circumstances of the case.

Ogaba further added that

“They (victims) were suspected cultists and robbers that specialized in phone snatching. They were mobbed and killed. Police are on the matter to unravel those involved in the killings.”
