Kano State Film Censorship Board Prohibits Movies Featuring Crossdressing and Thuggery.
The Kano State Film Censorship Board has announced a ban on the screening of films that depict or endorse crossdressing and thuggery within the state.
Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha made the announcement during a meeting with Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry, citing concerns about the negative impact of such content on youth and the erosion of traditional values.
El-Mustapha emphasized the need to remove any films that may undermine the state’s customs, norms, and values under the guise of gaining popularity or profit.
On a separate note, the police stated that cross-dressing is not a criminal offense and does not justify the arrest of individuals engaged in such behavior.
Police Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, speaking on a Channels TV interview, acknowledged the complexity of addressing cross-dressing cases, emphasizing the importance of credible evidence for prosecution.
While acknowledging the absence of specific laws criminalizing cross-dressing in Nigeria, Adejobi stressed the necessity of meeting legal standards, particularly in cases like rape, where specific points must be proven for successful prosecution.
