Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72.
Onyeka Onwenu reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness at the party confirmed the sad news to TheNiche. “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she collapsed. She was taken to Reddington Hospital but unfortunately did not survive,” the eyewitness said.

Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a well-known figure in Nigeria. She was called “The Elegant Stallion” for her grace and strong presence. Some of her popular songs include “One Love,” “You and I,” “Iyogogo,” and “Wait for Me,” a duet with Juju music star King Sunny Ade.
Onwenu was also a talented actress, starring in movies like “Mothers-in-Law” and “Half of a Yellow Sun.”

Besides her music and acting, Onwenu worked hard for the public and supported women’s rights. She was the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and became the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013. She was committed to promoting Nigerian culture and helping women.
