SECURITY ALERT: Abuja is Under Increased Threat of Terrorist Attacks, UK, US Warned, As They Move to Secure Their Citizens.

The United Kingdom, UK, and United States, US, have both alerted their citizens in Nigeria to the likelihood of terror attacks in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

On Sunday, the UK updated its terrorism alert to its citizens in Nigeria, warning of an increased threat of terrorist attacks in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

UK citizens were admonished to stay alert, “consider movements carefully, follow the local news and the advice of security authorities”.

The foreign travel advisory cautioned against visits to markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, football viewing centres, displacement camps, transport terminals (including train networks), government buildings — and schools.

In light of this alert, the British High Commission, BHC, in Abuja said only critical staff will be allowed access to its facility on Monday, October 24.

In a notice put out, the BHC said its decision would be binding on all staff. Parents are also strongly advised against sending their children to school.

On its part, the US also warned its citizens about possible terror attacks in Nigeria.

The US issued a security alert on Sunday citing “elevated risk of terror attacks” in parts of the country

In the alert posted on its website, the US embassy said the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, stands a high risk of the attack.

The US embassy said Terrorists may target government buildings, places of worship, schools, and markets.

Recreational centers such as hotels, bars, clubs, and restaurants are also said to be potential places of target.

Athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and properties of international organization were also listed as locations where there’s a risk of attack.

By virtue of the security alert Russ said it will offer reduced services at its embassy in the FCT until further notice.

The US warned American citizens to avoid all non-essential travel or movements and to stay alert.

Americans were advised to avoid crowds, carry their means of identification on them at all times, review their personal security plans and keep their cell phones charged in case of emergency.
