Tackling Economic Barriers to TB Treatment is Crucial in the Fight to End TB’ – Mrs. Deborah Ikeh.

The Executive Director of the Debriche Health Development Centre (DHDC), Mrs. Deborah Ikeh, has emphasized that addressing economic barriers is crucial to eradicating tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria.

Ikeh made this statement while congratulating participants of the recently concluded Skill Acquisition Program organized in Lagos by DHDC in collaboration with the Lagos State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme.

The program, titled “OneImpact Nigeria Support Group Skill Acquisition Program,” is supported by the Stop TB Partnership through its Challenge Facility for Civil Society OneImpact CLM project. The initiative aims to reduce the catastrophic costs faced by people affected by TB by equipping them with essential vocational skills.

Held at the African Villa Resort, Egbeda, Lagos, Nigeria, the maiden edition of the initiative empowered individuals undergoing TB treatment to build sustainable livelihoods, enhance treatment adherence, and promote economic independence, particularly among women and persons affected by TB.

Nigeria remains one of the African countries with the highest number of TB cases. Despite free TB testing and treatment being available nationwide, many individuals undergoing treatment face catastrophic financial costs. These challenges often lead to severe financial strain, stigma, and loss of income during the treatment period. This program is vital as it addresses these challenges by equipping participants with practical skills such as catering and shoemaking.

Speaking to journalists, Mrs. Deborah Ikeh, a seasoned TB advocate, expressed her delight at the program’s transformative impact on participants’ lives.

“This initiative is not just about acquiring skills; it’s about restoring dignity, hope, and the courage to dream again. Every participant represents resilience, and we’re here to support them in transforming their challenges into opportunities. By tackling the economic barriers to TB treatment, we are making meaningful strides towards the global goal of ending TB,” she said.
