The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Francis lying in state, showing the late pontiff dressed in red liturgical vestments, wearing a mitre, and holding a rosary in his hands. His body was displayed in an open casket at the Domus Sanctae Marthae chapel on Monday, April 21, 2025, surrounded by Swiss Guards, cardinals, and Vatican officials paying their respects.

The photos and video released by Vatican Media offer a solemn glimpse of the final moments before the Pope’s body is transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica for public veneration. The images capture the reverence of those present, including Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who blessed the late Pope as he lay in state.
Funeral Arrangements Announced
The Holy See Press Office confirmed that Pope Francis’ funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the Mass, which will be concelebrated by patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and priests from around the world.

The funeral Mass will conclude with the Ultima commendatio (final commendation) and Valedictio (farewell), after which the Pope’s body will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica before being entombed in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
Ahead of the funeral, the coffin will be carried in a solemn procession from the Casa Santa Marta chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the faithful will have the opportunity to pay their final respects.
