The recently held TikTok media workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, further demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to assisting local businesses and talented creators in gaining global recognition.
TikTok has played an important role in supporting local businesses and young talents who might not have the means to invest substantial sums of money in media companies or promoters to achieve global exposure and audiences.
For those unfamiliar with TikTok or not well-acquainted with the platform, it is a video-sharing mobile app that enables users to share short videos and captured moments. TikTok has surpassed 2 billion mobile downloads worldwide and is recognized as one of the fastest-growing mobile apps globally.
The media workshop is one of TikTok’s initiatives aimed at educating stakeholders in Sub-Saharan Africa about the app’s features and how business owners, emerging musicians, content creators, and comedians can utilize the app to advance their careers, similar to how individuals like “Guchi,” a musician, rose to fame through the platform.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for media industry stakeholders to network and brainstorm ways to further spread the positive impact of TikTok across Africa.
Keagile Makgoba, TikTok’s Communications Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Adesola Arogundade, Content Partnerships – Entertainment for Sub-Saharan Africa at TikTok, discussed various topics, including how TikTok’s algorithm functions and best practices to ensure users’ content reaches the right audience. TikTok operates as a content-based app, filtering content based on factors such as interest, relevance, and engagement.
For new users, it is advisable to select a niche or interest group—referred to as a “tribe”—that aligns with the content they intend to create. TikTok hosts various tribes or communities, including VSCO Girls, Foodies, BookTok, Plant Parents, Artists and Creatives, Meme Creators, Fitness and Wellness enthusiasts, Travel Enthusiasts, Language Learners, Educational Content creators, Positive Vibes promoters, Fashionistas, ASMR enthusiasts, Straight TikTok users, Cottagecore enthusiasts, Alt TikTok users, and more.
In terms of best practices, users are recommended to employ relevant hashtags that pertain to their trade or profession. Using five hashtags is generally sufficient, as an excessive number can confuse the algorithm. Consistent posting is crucial, especially for new users. Developing a posting schedule can help maintain consistency and enhance visibility and engagement. Additionally, engaging with the content one creates is crucial—responding to comments and showing appreciation by liking comments can establish a stronger connection with the audience. To capture the audience’s attention, it is beneficial to start videos with the most captivating part.

– Share interesting and informative content aligned with your niche.
– Optimal video length is between 30 to 60 seconds for maximum engagement.
– Prioritize vertical video formats over horizontal.
– Utilize trending music and sounds within the app for your videos.
– Add text or stickers to videos to attract attention.
– Incorporate various effects and filters in your posts.
– When going live, limit the duration to 30 to 60 minutes and avoid dull conversations.
– Adhere to TikTok’s Community Guidelines; review these guidelines before using the platform to prevent flagged content.
– Report any instances of abuse or inappropriate content.
