UNIZIK Law Student Dies After Being Denied Access to Diabetes Medication Over Unpaid Rent.
The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community is in mourning following the heartbreaking death of Chioma Isabella Ajana, a vibrant law student whose life was cut short due to an alleged act of negligence and cruelty. Isabella, who suffered from diabetes, tragically passed away after being denied access to her life-saving medication—all because of an unpaid hostel fee of N120,000.

Isabella, a diligent student managing her diabetes, reportedly lost her room key and urgently needed to retrieve her medication. However, the hostel mistress allegedly refused to provide a spare key unless she paid her outstanding rent. Despite pleas from Isabella and fellow students, the hostel mistress stood her ground, leaving the young woman without access to the insulin or other medications she needed to survive.

Hours later, Isabella’s condition worsened, and she collapsed. By the time help arrived, it was too late. The university community and social media erupted in grief and outrage as news of her death spread.
The news of Isabella’s preventable death has sparked fury across social media platforms. Many Nigerians are expressing their anger at what they see as a gross violation of human dignity. The general sentiment is that no amount of money should ever be valued above a human life, especially not N120,000.

Students from UNIZIK and other institutions have come forward with similar stories of exploitation and harsh treatment by hostel owners and caretakers. These accounts paint a disturbing picture of how vulnerable students are often at the mercy of those who control their accommodation.

Isabella’s tragic death has exposed critical gaps in student welfare systems at Nigerian universities. There are growing demands for the government and school authorities to implement measures that would prevent such occurrences in the future.
Many are calling for strict regulations governing private hostels and their treatment of students. There should be clear policies regarding emergencies, especially for students with known medical conditions. Additionally, universities need to establish better support systems for students facing financial difficulties, ensuring that no one’s life is endangered due to the inability to pay fees.
Beyond the immediate calls for justice, Isabella’s death is a sobering reminder of the value we place on human life in our society. It raises difficult questions about our collective humanity and the systems we’ve created that allow such tragedies to occur.
