A 24-year-old University of Port Harcourt student, Damian Okoligwe, has denied killing his girlfriend, Miss Justina Otuene. He claimed that she was already dead when he went to her room to check on her.
Okoligwe, a final-year Petrochemical Engineering student, was paraded by the Rivers State Police Command on Thursday, October 26, 2023, for allegedly killing and dismembering Otuene’s body.
The police said Okoligwe invited Otuene to his apartment on NTA Road, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state on October 23, 2023, and killed her. He then dismembered her body and placed it in a sack, which he was about to dispose of when he was arrested by the police.
However, Okoligwe denied killing Otuene. He told journalists that he was sick when she visited him and that he went to his brother’s house for treatment after she died and returned three days late to dispose off her body.
He said: “I was calling her but she was not responding. I had to go back to check on her. I went to check on her, she was not moving at all. She was very stiff and strong. After that, I did not know what to do, I had to carry her body into another room, and then I called my brother to come to my place.
“He came, and then he took me out of the place. He did not know there was anybody in my house. He took me to his place. That was where I received my treatment.”
Okoligwe said he didn’t know what to do, so he called his brother, who took him away. He said he was thinking of reporting the matter to the police, but he blamed himself for not doing so earlier.
Okoligwe’s claim is difficult to believe, given the circumstances of Otuene’s death. Her body was found dismembered in his apartment, and he was caught trying to dispose of it.

Okoligwe may be lying to protect himself. He may have killed Otuene in a fit of rage or for some other reason maybe rituals as many suspect him to be a yahoo boy. He is an undergraduate student living in a one bedroom apartment, how did he get the money to afford such a luxury apartment. He told newsmen that he make a living by playing Bet Naija.
The police investigation is ongoing, and it will be up to the courts to decide whether Okoligwe is guilty of murder. However, the evidence against him is strong.
