QATAR Allegedly Rejected President Tinubu's Visit

QATAR Allegedly Rejected President Tinubu’s Visit.

Qatari authorities had allegedly declined the proposed visit of Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, who intended to lead an investment and business roundtable in the Gulf state.

This decision emerged as a result of the absence of a legally binding agreement about foreign investments between the two nations.

On Thursday, the Government of Qatar sent a letter to the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, disclosing the insurmountable reasons for their inability to accommodate Mr. Tinubu and host the planned summit slated for March 2 and 3.

The letter, dispatched on February 22, cited the major reason for not receiving the President, “There is no any agreement signed between the State of Qatar and the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Investment Promotion and Protection.” For this reason, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Qatar expressed regrets for not being able to organize a Business and Investment Forum initiated by the Nigerian government.

Also, the concurrent obligations of Qatar’s Ministry of Trade on the days of Mr. Tinubu’s intended visit formed another setback.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim al-Thani, the Qatari Minister of Business and Industry, had other official engagements outside the country during the scheduled visit period, making it impossible for him to meet the Nigerian President. The inescapability of these predetermined commitments was highlighted in the Qatari response.

Adding to this, Qatar was also planning to conduct its own “web summit” at the same time as Mr. Tinubu intended visit. With Qatari officials heavily involved in their domestic summit, having foreign delegates at the same time could cause a potential strain on resources and officials’ attention.
