Ngannou, who gained attention in the heavyweight boxing scene after his impressive performance against WBC reigning champion Tyson Fury in October 2023, faced Joshua in what was anticipated to be a showdown of titans. Despite losing to Fury in a split decision, Ngannou’s performance had garnered widespread acclaim, with many believing he had displayed the potential to become a significant force in the division.
Reflecting on Ngannou’s journey and their bout, Joshua expressed admiration for his opponent’s skills and resilience. “When I saw the fight with Fury, I thought damn, this guy could fight, I wanted a piece of that,” Joshua remarked after his victory. “He’s an inspiration, a great champion, and this shouldn’t take away from his capabilities.”
Despite facing setbacks, including the loss to Joshua, Ngannou’s potential in the sport remains undeniable. Joshua emphasized this point, urging Ngannou not to abandon boxing and to stay dedicated to his craft.
“He can come again. I told him he shouldn’t leave boxing. He’s two fights in, and he’s fought the best,” Joshua stated. “He can go a long way if he stays dedicated.”
