Tinubu Administration Halts Creation of New Federal Tertiary Institutions.

In a significant policy shift, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has imposed a seven-year ban on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country. The decision was formally approved during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, marking a new direction for Nigeria’s education sector.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, explained that the moratorium is a necessary measure to address the declining quality of education. He argued that the country’s main challenge is no longer a lack of access to higher education, but rather the negative effects of the continuous duplication of institutions. This, he noted, has led to a major degradation of infrastructure and a shortage of qualified academic staff.

Alausa emphasized the urgency of the new policy, stating, “If we do not act decisively, it will lead to marked declines in educational quality and undermine the international respect that Nigerian graduates command.”

Rather than expanding the number of schools, the government’s new strategy is to redirect resources toward enhancing existing ones. The plan is to invest in improving physical facilities, increasing manpower, and expanding the capacity of current institutions to ensure they can provide a higher standard of learning for students.
