Community in Shock as Pregnant Pastor’s Wife is Raped and Killed in Rivers State.

Police in Rivers State have arrested Emeka, a suspect accused of raping and strangling Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward, the pregnant wife of an assistant pastor in the Abarikpo community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Emeka was apprehended by operatives of the Ahoada Divisional Police headquarters on Thursday after evading capture for 15 months since committing the crime on February 12, 2023.

Mr. Lawyer Steward, an assistant pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Abarikpo, recounted the tragic events leading to his wife’s death. He explained that his wife had a minor altercation with Emeka, calling him a wicked man. Later that night, around 1 am, Emeka and his gang broke into their house and abducted his wife, who was five months pregnant. She was taken to a forest hideout, where she was gang-raped and strangled to death.

Mr. Steward stated, “Yes, Mr. Emeka is the mastermind behind my wife’s death. After a quarrel, my wife called him a wicked man. He responded, ‘You called me wicked, you will see wickedness today.’ That night, they broke into my house and took my wife away.”

He confirmed the suspect’s arrest and urged the government to ensure justice is served, preventing the suspect from escaping punishment. “I want the government to intervene so that justice will prevail,” he said.

Following Emeka’s arrest, other victims from the Abarikpo community have been coming forward to give their statements, accusing Emeka of ordering the killings of their relatives during the reign of the infamous cultist, David Gift, also known as 2Baba.

Mr. Steward revealed that his wife’s body was discovered near a fishing pond several hours after her abduction, bearing multiple bruises and bleeding from her private parts. Her body has since been deposited in a morgue. He added that his late wife had been a vocal critic of criminal and cult-related activities in their community.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to comment on the development. The Public Relations Officer for the state command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, promised to provide a statement but had not done so by the time of this report.
