This year’s procession took on a particularly heartwarming tone as children and persons with disabilities (PWDs) from the Brazilian Campos team became one of the highlights of the carnival. Dressed in vibrant, Afro-Caribbean-inspired costumes, they danced and paraded alongside other performers, their infectious energy captivating the crowd. The inclusion of PWDs sent a powerful message of unity and accessibility, reinforcing the carnival’s spirit of communal celebration.

The carnival, rooted in the 19th-century traditions of formerly enslaved Africans who returned from Brazil, was a dazzling display of cultural preservation. Revelers adorned in elaborate, multicolored outfits paid homage to their ancestors with rhythmic dances, drumming, and theatrical performances. The streets pulsed with the sounds of samba-infused Afrobeat, blending Nigerian and Brazilian influences into a mesmerizing sensory experience.

Among the many striking sights was Surulere lawmaker Desmond Elliot, who made a grand entrance atop a horse, dressed in a radiant yellow carnival outfit with a matching cap. His regal appearance—reminiscent of a king leading a procession—drew cheers from the audience, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who applauded the spectacle.

The Lagos Fanti Carnival traces its origins to the Afro-Brazilian returnees who settled in Lagos in the late 1800s, bringing with them a fusion of Yoruba and Brazilian culture. Today, the event serves as both a festival of remembrance and a living testament to resilience, celebrating the enduring ties between Nigeria and the African diaspora in the Americas.
