Kuti attended Trinity College of Music in London, where he formed the band Koola Lobitos in 1969, and took the band to the United States, where he discovered the Black Power movement, which heavily influenced his music and political ideology.
He was regarded as one of Africa’s most charismatic music performers of all time.
