A horrific case of anti-trans violence has shocked Colombia after Sara Millerey González, a transgender woman, drowned in a ravine while bystanders filmed her struggle and told others not to intervene.
According to Amnesty International, the 28-year-old was brutally attacked before her death—raped, her limbs broken, and then thrown into the La García ravine in Bella’s Playa Rica neighborhood. Her body was discovered on April 4, bearing signs of severe violence.

Sara’s mother, Sandra Borja, received a panicked call from her sister around 3 p.m., alerting her that Sara was drowning in the creek. When Sandra arrived, she found her daughter desperately clinging to a branch as the rushing waters battered her. But instead of helping, a group of locals stood by, recording Sara’s pleas for help on their phones.

A relative told El Colombiano that the bystanders actively discouraged others from intervening. “There were some guys standing there, also with their cell phones recording what was happening to her, and they said not to help her,” the relative said. “So there was fear of intervening for fear of being shot. It was necessary for the police to intervene.”

The police arrived later to save Sara, but she died the next day from complications from her injuries.
A disturbing video of Sara’s final moments circulated on social media, showing her struggling in knee-deep muddy water, her face visibly injured, unable to move her arms. The footage has ignited fury over the cruelty and complicity of those who watched—and filmed—rather than acted.

“My first reaction was to throw myself into the river,” Sandra told EL PAÍS, heartbroken over the loss of her daughter.
Authorities suspect Sara was targeted in a hate crime, possibly by locals with ties to criminal gangs. The case has drawn condemnation from human rights groups, who highlight the extreme violence faced by transgender individuals in Colombia and across Latin America.
