Father and Son Die After Sinkhole Swallows Their Car During Flood Rescue Efforts in Italy.
A tragic incident in northern Italy has claimed the lives of a father and son after a sinkhole opened beneath their car, sweeping them into a nearby river. The victims, identified as 64-year-old Leone Nardon and his 21-year-old son Francesco, were reportedly on their way to assist in rescue efforts amid severe flooding when the ground collapsed under their vehicle.

The disaster occurred in the town of Valdagno in the Vicenza province, where heavy rains had triggered dangerous flooding. As Leone and Francesco drove into the area, the road beneath them gave way, plunging their car into a sinkhole. The powerful currents then carried the vehicle into the Agno River.
Emergency responders later recovered Leone’s body on the riverbed, while Francesco was found near the car. Authorities believe the young man had attempted to escape but was tragically trapped in the rushing waters.

The heartbreaking loss has left the local community in shock. Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto region, expressed his grief, stating, “It is a tragedy. The loss of these two lives will be remembered. I send my condolences to the family of the two victims.”
Francesco, an engineering student at the University of Modena, was also a dedicated member of the Band Cornedo Vicentino, where he played the trumpet. The band shared an emotional tribute, highlighting his passion and commitment.

“Francesco had been with us a little over three years, but from the beginning, he was an example of dedication and generosity,” the band wrote. “Despite attending university in Modena, he never missed rehearsals, performances, or concerts whenever he returned to Valdagno. His love for music was immense.”
They also praised his character, adding, “His sense of duty and integrity were rare and precious qualities, especially in today’s world. His presence left a positive mark, and his example inspires us to be better every day.”

The devastating incident underscores the dangers posed by extreme weather and sudden geological events. As Italy and other parts of Europe face increasingly unpredictable conditions due to climate change, such tragedies serve as a grim reminder of the risks faced by both rescuers and civilians during natural disasters.
