In the picturesque coastal town of Akassa in Brass, a fisherman’s net brought up a colossal sea creature, akin to a monster, much to the amazement of onlookers.

With an ear-to-ear grin, the ecstatic fisherman wasted no time in inviting his fellow fishermen and curious bystanders to marvel at his extraordinary find. He was jubilant, declaring that this remarkable discovery would make for an exceptional meal. His exuberant cries of “food is ready” echoed through the air.

A social media user who captured the moment couldn’t contain their excitement and posted the event online for all to witness:

“Happening now in Bayelsa State, Akassa (Brass)! A fisherman caught this mighty fish this evening at about 6 pm. He doesn’t even know the name of the fish, and all he was shouting was, ‘today e don enter…food is ready!!’ waiting to have a taste of it now.”

As it turns out, the magnificent creature the fisherman had unwittingly snared was a Manatee, one of the most intriguing marine mammals found in the waters of Nigeria and other parts of Africa. These gentle giants are often considered good luck when caught, and local fishermen frequently seize the opportunity to enjoy their succulent meat.

Manatees, also known as sea cows, are known for their docile nature and herbivorous diet, primarily consisting of aquatic vegetation. These graceful marine mammals can reach impressive weights of up to 1,300 kilograms (2,870 pounds) and can grow to lengths of over 4 meters (13 feet). Manatees are characterized by their slow and lumbering movements, often seen grazing peacefully on sea grasses in the shallow coastal waters they call home.

While it’s uncommon to come across such a magnificent Manatee in fishing nets, for the delighted fisherman and his community, this unexpected encounter was not just a stroke of luck but also proof of the wonders that the Nigerian waters have to offer.
