Free Nnamdi Kanu Protest: Live Ammunition, Tear Gas Allegedly Fired at Sowore and Civil Servants (Video).
The protest for the release of Nnamdi Kanu took a dramatic turn on Tuesday with reports emerging that security agencies allegedly fired live ammunition at convener Omoyele Sowore and tear gas at civil servants during what was intended as a peaceful demonstration.
According to eyewitness accounts, the situation escalated significantly in the Secretariat area of Abuja, home to the National Assembly and numerous government ministries. An anonymous source, who spoke exclusively to Toktok9ja, reported a heavy security presence conducting stop-and-search operations.

The witness stated that even a clearly marked staff bus for a government parastatal was stopped. After the driver informed security agents they were heading to work, they were instructed to turn around and find an alternative route. The driver complied, but discovered that all access routes to the Secretariat had been barricaded by a joint task force comprising the Army, Police, and Civil Defence. With no way through, the bus was forced to return.

Further reports indicate that a large number of civil servants working in the Secretariat area were left stranded, unable to reach their offices. In a controversial move, tear gas was allegedly fired into the crowds of these stranded workers to disperse them. It is critical to note that these individuals were not protesters, but Nigerians attempting to go about their daily work.

The security lockdown caused massive traffic holdups across Abuja, with the Maraba area in Nasarawa State reported as one of the worst affected, leaving many workers trapped.

The protests calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been incarcerated for years, have garnered support from various national and international groups. The recent events have sparked public outcry, with many questioning the government’s approach. This is especially poignant given that President Bola Tinubu recently granted state pardons to some individuals, including those convicted of serious crimes, and as repented terrorists are being rehabilitated. This has led many to wonder why Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention.
