According to a recent report by PM News, Murja Kunya, 24, a well- known Kano TikTok Skits creator, has been detained in custody for suspected defamation of character, injurious lie, and criminal intimidation of two people.
Recall that on January 30, the Daily Post reported that the Police in Kano State had detained the star of the viral comedy TikToker for allegedly defiling society’ s morality.
She was reportedly detained while attempting to reserve hotel rooms for her out- of- town guests who traveled to attend her highly publicized birthday celebration.
While, in the most recent report, the prosecution’ s attorney, Lamido Sorondinki, informed the Upper Shari’ a Court in Kano that Murja Kunya had slandered the reputations of two people on January 29 by sharing their defamatory WhatsApp Statuses with the public.
The prosecution said that Kunya threatened the complainant in Hausa and made a hurtful comment about them.
The defendant, however, entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations leveled against her.
The prosecution claims that the offense is against sections 391 and 393 of Kano State Shari’ a Law.
However, Mr. Yasir Umar- Musa, the defense attorney, filed a bail application in accordance with sections 168 and 172 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2019 Kano, as well as sections 35 and 36 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’ s 1999 Constitution, as amended.
Malam Abdullahi Halliru the presiding judge however ordered that the defendant be remainder in custody and set a hearing date or February 16 for the case.
Kunya was also charged with indecent aft and violation of public peace before the Upper Sharia Court.
Meanwhile the prosecution Sorondinki informed the court that on August 30, 222 Barr Muhd Ali Hamza and seven others filed a direct complaint at Upper Sharia Court Bichi Kano directing the Kano Commissioner of Police to investigate the defendant and other tiktokers.
He said that between 2021 and 2022 the defendant colluded with Mr. 442 Safarau, Dan Maraya, Amude Booth, Kwau Dan Sarki, Ado Gwa he, Ummi Shariki, Samha Inuwa, and Babiana all now at large.
He said “the defendant mimed a video song that violate moral law and custom of the people of the state.
“The video I was released by Ado Gwanja and Kawu Dan Sarki (now at large) via TikTok Instagram.
The defendant sid he did not commit the crime.
The defendant was reportedly charged with obscene or indecent conduct, continuation of annoyance, and inciting disturbance of public peace in violation of section 355, 353 and 275 of Kano State Sharia law.
The case was postponed until February 16 for hearing while Malam Abdullahi Halliru ordered the defendant to be held in detention facility.
