There was a little relief yesterday among the students when it was reported that the police command had arrested one of the suspected policemen who allegedly r@ped a student of Abia State Polytechnic in their custody.

The incident snowballs into chaos in the city of Aba on Friday where students in their thousands trooped to the street in protest of the dastardly and shameful act of the policemen who are expected to be the protector of the law.

According to a report credited to SaharaRepoters, the police officers were said to have been passing beside the lodge of the students and they allegedly perceived what smelled like Indian hemp(Igbo). Smoking in a hostel and a private lodge is a common thing among the students, especially male students.

So they then stormed the building to raid them. After the raid, 6 students were arrested in connection to having Indian Hemp in their possession. 3 other students were male while the other 3 were female and they were all taken to police custody.

However, along the line, 5 of the students were released having perfected their bail(allegedly paid money) with the policemen. The last girl which was eventually r@ped was reportedly held back for a reason that is not yet known.

She was reportedly locked up while others were released from police custody. Soon, it was then alleged that the officers assaulted her. At least, one of the officers also allegedly r@ped her in their custody.

When the news broke out about the r@ped, the students of the institution stormed the streets and roads of aba in protest against the shameful act of the men of the Nigerian Police in the state. They were demanding that justice should be served to the RRS men who were alleged to have committed the offense.

Also, the students used the opportunity to demand the accreditation of one of the departments in the school. According to one of the protesting students, the Department of Civil Engineering has not been accredited. All the graduating students from the Department usually have the Department of Building in their certificate instead of Civil Engineering.

The students thereby paralyzed all activities in the state as they blocked one of the major roads in the city of Aba which is the Aba- Owerri road. Soon policemen were drafted to the scene of the demonstration to restore peace. It however turned to more chaos as police were recorded shooting live ammunition at the protest ground leading to many students scampering to safety and many injured in the process.

Police Command’s Reactions

Based on a report credited to SaharaReporters, the State Police Command in Abia has arrested one of its officers identified as Corporal Chinedu Nwachukwu, for allegedly r@ping a student of the Abia State Polytechnic, in Aba.

According to the statement released by the command’ s spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, the police command expressed regret over the disgraceful act allegedly committed by the policemen in the city.

He said, ” After visiting the victim at the hospital and obtaining information from her, an investigation was launched which led to the arrest of the suspect.

” The Commissioner of Police, CP Janet Agbede, being a woman and a mother has been on her toes with other officers in the command to douse the tension and to find out what happened.

” The Commissioner of Police and her management team visited and listened to the victim in the hospital. After hearing from the victim, a serious investigation started through which the policeman, Corporal Nwachukwu Chinedu, who committed the barbaric act was arrested. He was not attached to Rapid Response Squad Aba (RRS) as alleged by the protesters.

” The Commissioner of Police appeals to the Abia Polytechnic community and the general public to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of the Police investigation which is ongoing and would be fast- tracked and made public to ensure justice and the law will take its course. “

Meanwhile, the 18- year- old Abia Poly student is in hospital now receiving treatment and undergoing medical examination for the abuse she suffers from the officers.

The wife of the state governor, Nkechi Ikpeazu, has visited her in the hospital and promised to take care of the medical bills.

She also promised to make sure that justice is done in the matter, And that her husband, the governor of Abia State is interested in the matter. The governor of Abia State has promised to make sure that those involved will be brought to book.

The arrested police officer, Corporal Chinedu Nwachukwu, is expected to be dismissed from the force if found guilty of the alleged offense. In addition, he will also be prosecuted at a competent court of jurisdiction to answer for his crime immediately after he is dismissed by the police force.
