A Nigerian police officer shot and killed a teenage WAEC student in Ibadan while the boy was on his way to sit for an examination. The victim, Kehinde Alade, was in a car with four other children when the tragic incident occurred.
The father of the deceased, Mr. Odunayo Alade, revealed in a press interview that he refused to stop when the police attempted to block his vehicle because his son had an exam scheduled for 8:30 am. He feared that stopping would lead to unnecessary delays, a common concern for many Nigerians who have had encounters with law enforcement.
“You know how the Nigerian government works; once you fall into their traps, it’s hard to get out,” Mr. Alade said. “Moreover, the elder brother of the deceased was having an 8:30 am paper yesterday, and if I had stopped, they would have delayed the boy. That’s why I had to maneuver my way.”

Mr. Alade stated that after driving off, he heard a gunshot but initially thought they were out of danger—until Kehinde’s twin brother raised the alarm.
“I just heard a gunshot, I didn’t stop. Then the boy in question was shouting, ‘Daddy!’ I even shouted at him that we had left the police already, till his twin brother told me that he had been shot,” the grieving father recounted. “I parked, brought him out, and the place was soaked with blood.”
The police authorities have claimed that the officer fired a “stray bullet” while aiming for the car’s tires, alleging that they suspected Mr. Alade of being a criminal or kidnapper. However, video footage of the incident shows the officers chasing the vehicle and the father evading their attempts to block him.

Kehinde Alade had dreams of becoming a lawyer, a future that was brutally cut short by a single bullet. His father emotionally recalled, “He was telling me last week that he would like to be a lawyer when he grows up.”

The incident has raised serious concerns about police brutality and the reckless use of firearms by law enforcement officers. Many Nigerians are questioning:
- Why did the officer open fire on a car filled with children?
- Was deadly force necessary in this situation?
- What measures will be taken to ensure justice for Kehinde and prevent such tragedies in the future?
The tragic death of Kehinde Alade is yet another painful reminder of the need for police reform in Nigeria.
