Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), urging an investigation into alleged defamatory statements made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central.

In a petition filed by his lawyer, Mr. N.A. Abubakar, Bello demanded that the police summon Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to provide evidence supporting her claims. Should she fail to do so, he requested her immediate arrest and prosecution for criminal defamation, incitement, and spreading false information.

The petition stated that the senator’s remarks were not only baseless but also capable of inciting public unrest. According to Bello’s legal team, her statements violated Nigerian laws, including the Cybercrimes Act and the Penal Code.

The controversy stems from a public rally in Okehi LGA on April 1, 2025, where Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly accused Bello of conspiring with Senate President Godswill Akpabio to orchestrate her assassination. She further claimed that money exchanged hands to facilitate her recall from the Senate.

Bello’s lawyer argued that these allegations were fabricated, malicious, and intended to tarnish his client’s reputation. He emphasized that the former governor had previously ignored Akpoti-Uduaghan’s past accusations out of goodwill but would no longer tolerate such defamation.

In a separate legal notice, Bello’s legal representatives, led by Chief R.O. Balogun, SAN, demanded that the senator issue a public retraction and apology in two national newspapers within 14 days. Failure to comply, they warned, would result in civil and criminal lawsuits.

The petition also warned that unchecked false accusations could destabilize public order and undermine Nigeria’s democracy. Bello’s legal team urged the IGP to act swiftly to prevent further misuse of political platforms for spreading harmful misinformation.
