Meet The Senior Army Officer From The South East Who May Be Appointed Chief Of Army Staff.

As the country mourns the late Chief of Army staff, the politics of succession has already started as some reports have filtered in that the President has appointed an acting Chief of army staff.

The information turned out to be false as such an announcement was never made in the first place.

The criteria of selecting a chief of army staff lie solely with the president although ranking comes to play in the selection process too.

Recall there was a widespread agitation by people of the southeast region for the president to pick a south easterner as a replacement when the former COAs, Buratai was removed from office.

That did not happen as the president went ahead to pick Attahiru who also, is a northerner.

This time around, there is a high- ranking officer from the southeast who has been penned down following his ranking and antecedents in the army.

He is the current Chief of Policy and Plan in the Nigerian Army, Major General Ben Ahanotu of Regular Course 35.

Major General Ahanotu is from Anambra State and as a Colonel, he commanded the Military Operation that captured the founder of Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, and his followers at their hideout in Maiduguri in 2009 before handing them over to the Police.

As general officer commanding 3 division, Jos in 2017, General Ahanotu had accused the politicians in the region of being responsible for the farmers, herdsmen clash which cause the death of over 18 people in Taraba.

A fearless and no- nonsense officer, he is dedicated and well known for his ruthlessness to criminality and all acts of terrorism.

If all things go as planned, Ahanotu may go on to become the new chief of army staff.
