Imo Residents Run Helter Skelter As Gunmen Embarked on Shooting Spree In Owerri.
The city of Owerri was thrown into confusion last week Wednesday as residents were seen scampering for their lives following a shoot-out between the security operatives and unknown shooters suspected to be cult members.
So many residents of the area were forced to use alternative routes as all roads leading in and out of the state capital was blocked by security forces.
The shoot out which happened around MCC road threw the state into serious confusion as police beefed up security in the governor’s lodge, Ama Hausa, Bank road, Douglas, and Owerri correctional facility which were suspected to be the main target of the gunmen.
All shopping malls, schools, banks and worship centers in the affected areas were forced to stop activities for the day.
It was revealed to journalists by some sources in the area that a police sergeant identified as Loveday Obilonu was reportedly killed by some unknown gunmen who unleashed terror in the area.
Sources from one of the banks in the affected area disclosed to newsmen that the management of the bank on sensing danger, ordered all customers to vacate the banking hall immediately after the shooting started and all staff of the bank was told to close for the day.
An undergraduate of Imo State University was also attacked and his vehicle was snatched at gunpoint at the back gate of Imo State University(IMSU).
The law student who spoke to our correspondent narrated how he pleaded with the gunmen to spare his life and go with the vehicle.
HRH Alhaji Auwal Suleiman, the traditional ruler of the Hausa community in owerri, said that the security forces at Ama Hausa area really assisted them because he suspects the target of the gun men was Ama Hausa.
He said, ‘”The soldiers overpowered the gunmen who tried to invade the area yesterday with their intimidating shootings.”
“We give Allah all thanks because no fatality was recorded in the shootout in such a busy area.”
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo state police command, Bala Elkana when contacted said the shootings were carried out by two rival cult groups who engaged each other in a gun battle.
