New Intelligence Reveals 14 Schools in States and FCT Vulnerable to Another Attack by Bandits in Nigeria.
The security situation in Nigeria continues to be a cause for concern, particularly regarding the safety of schools in various states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Recent intelligence has highlighted the vulnerability of 14 schools in these regions to potential attacks by bandits and insurgents, raising alarm bells for the safety of students, teachers, and staff members.
Hajia Halima Iliya, the National Coordinator of Financing Safe Schools in Nigeria, has brought attention to this critical issue, stressing the urgent need for intervention measures to protect educational institutions and the people within them. Comprehensive data collection efforts have been undertaken to assess the risk levels faced by these schools, highlighting the severity of the situation.
While specific details about the states were not disclosed by Iliya, insights from Hammed Abodunrin, the spokesperson for the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, Nigeria Security, and Civil Defence Corps, shed light on the affected regions. States such as Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Katsina, FCT, Kebbi, Sokoto, Plateau, Zamfara, and three others are among those identified as facing heightened security risks.
The recent spate of abductions further shows the urgency of the situation. Shockingly, 465 pupils, teachers, and women are currently in captivity following abductions in the past week alone. These numbers reflect a disturbing trend of attacks on educational institutions, highlighting the vulnerability of students and staff members across the country.

One of the most recent incidents involved the kidnapping of fifteen pupils from an Islamiya school in Sokoto State, adding to the growing number of abducted individuals. Such incidents not only disrupt the education system but also instill fear and trauma among students, parents, and educators.
The safety and security of schools are fundamental to ensuring a conducive learning environment and fostering national development. The Federal Government of Nigeria must prioritize strategies to protect schools and prevent further attacks. This includes enhancing security measures, increasing intelligence-gathering efforts, and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to address the root causes of insecurity in these regions.
