Nigerian Government Launches Paid Youth Internship with N150,000 Monthly Stipend

Nigerian Government Launches Paid Youth Internship with N150,000 Monthly Stipend.

The Federal Government has introduced a new one-year paid internship program designed to provide graduates with practical work experience and a monthly income.

The program, known as the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme (NJFP), was announced by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadeja, at a press briefing in the nation’s capital. He described the initiative as a central part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at empowering young Nigerians and strengthening the economy.

“The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme is a key pillar of the administration’s long-term plan to empower our young people, bridge the unemployment gap, and build a stronger, more inclusive economy,” Hadeja stated.

The official launch is scheduled for Wednesday at the State House Conference Centre, with Vice President Kashim Shettima expected to preside over the event.

A core feature of the program is the financial support for participants. Each selected fellow will receive a monthly stipend of N150,000 throughout the 12-month period. Participants will be placed in various public and private sector organizations, where they will receive mentorship and gain hands-on experience to improve their career prospects.

Hadeja explained that the NJFP was designed to help with economic recovery, particularly following challenges made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic, while also building the skills of the national workforce.

The program is not being undertaken by the government alone. It is supported by major international partners, including the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). According to reports, the EU has committed €44 million (approximately N70 billion) to support the rollout of the scheme.

The government envisions the program as a stepping stone to lasting employment and business creation. Organizations that host fellows will have access to a pool of skilled young talent, which can help reduce future recruitment costs. For the participants, the experience could lead directly to a permanent job or provide the skills and confidence to start their own business.

“When the programme ends, some organisations may decide to keep the fellows on their team, while others might be inspired to start their own businesses, creating more opportunities for others,” Hadeja added.

This internship scheme is one of several recent government efforts focused on economic empowerment. Last month, a separate N50,000 grant program was launched to support small business owners. Another recent initiative, the Petty Traders Grant Support Programme, is providing grants between N10,000 and N100,000 to small-scale traders like street vendors and kiosk owners to help them grow their businesses.
