Over 240K Cases Globally: NCDC Advises Nigerians as Deadly Chikungunya Virus Spreads Globally.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a critical public health advisory following a global surge in Chikungunya virus cases, a mosquito-borne disease causing severe joint pain and fever. With over 240,000 cases and 90 deaths reported across 16 countries this year—including a recent spike in China—Nigeria is on high alert as the rainy season and flooding create perfect breeding conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Deadly Chikungunya Virus

What is Chikungunya Virus?

Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the same species that spread Dengue and Yellow Fever. Unlike malaria-carrying Anopheles mosquitoes (which bite at night), Aedes mosquitoes are active during the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, making all-day protection crucial.

Symptoms Include:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe joint pain (can last for months)
  • Muscle pain, headache, nausea
  • Fatigue and rash

While rarely fatal, the virus can cause debilitating pain, disrupting daily life for weeks or even months.

Why is Nigeria at Risk?

The NCDC warns that flooding and stagnant water from heavy rains create ideal mosquito breeding sites, increasing the risk of outbreaks. Though no cases have been confirmed in Nigeria in 2025, the agency emphasizes preventive measures to avoid a potential crisis.

Key Recommendations:

✅ Sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets (even if mosquitoes are daytime biters, nighttime protection is still vital)
✅ Wear long sleeves and trousers to reduce exposure
✅ Use EPA-approved mosquito repellents on exposed skin
✅ Eliminate standing water (empty containers, cover water storage)
✅ Maintain proper hygiene to reduce infection risks

NCDC’s Preparedness Plan

The agency has strengthened surveillance systems, including collaboration with the National Arbovirus and Vector Research Centre (NAVRC) in Enugu, to ensure early detection and rapid response if cases emerge.

“We must act now to prevent an outbreak,” the NCDC stressed. “Communities in flood-prone areas are especially vulnerable.”

Global Outbreak Snapshot (2025 Data):

🌍 240,000+ cases
🌍 90+ deaths
🌍 16+ countries affected
🌍 China reports 5,000 cases (3,000 in Guangdong in just one week)
