Over 250,000 Constituents Demand Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition from voters in Kogi Central Senatorial District seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition was submitted on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Reports confirm that over 250,000 registered voters—more than half of the 480,000 constituents in the district—signed the petition. This exceeds the 50% threshold required by law to initiate a recall process.

The petition follows a recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which overturned an earlier order blocking INEC from accepting recall requests. In its decision on Friday, the court upheld the legality of the recall process, stating that it aligns with constitutional provisions and the democratic rights of citizens. The court also encouraged constituents to exercise their rights peacefully.
This development comes after an interim injunction was issued on Thursday, temporarily preventing INEC from receiving or acting on any recall petition against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. The court had initially halted the process following claims by the applicants—registered voters in Kogi Central—that the petition contained fraudulent signatures.
The plaintiffs, represented by their lawyer, Smart Nwachimere, argued that the signatures were falsified. As a result, the court barred INEC from processing the petition or conducting any referendum until the case is resolved.
The matter has been adjourned to May 6, 2025, for further hearing. Meanwhile, INEC has acknowledged receipt of the petition, marking a significant step in the ongoing recall process.
