President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi has died at the age of 55 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Nkurunziza’s death was confirmed through an official statement by the Government of Burundi.
According to the statement, the late president was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he suffered a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him could not yield any positive results.
Nkurunziza was due to step down from the presidency in August, after serving his country for 15 years.
It would be recalled that the late president’s decision to run for a third term in office plunged the African Great Lakes Region country into chaos.
He, however, decided to retire and was to be known as the “supreme guide to patriotism” after a change in the constitution and he was able to run for a further term in last month’s election.
