The National Police Service has withdrawn 13 bodyguards attached to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko as part of the move to scale down security details attached toVIPs.

Early this month, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i authorised scaling down of officers attached to VIPs with at least 5,000 police officers targeted in the process.

“We are doing this so that we shall have the lives of Kenyans protected. There is no need of dispatching several guards to VIPs yet ordinary Kenyans are suffering,” he said.

The move was met with protests with Kandara MP Alice Wahome accusing Matiang’i of exposing leaders to unprecedented danger.

“Some of us have only two guards and when Matiang’i tells us that he will scale them down, it really surprises me,” she said.

And Sonko will now have to operate with only two guards as opposed to the whooping 15 who have been guarding him.

Over the weekend, the Jubilee governor accused Interior PS Karanja Kibicho of undermining him as he protested a protocol hitch in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s presence.

A similar austerity measure will be replicated in all county governors and other state officers with parastatal chiefs asked to use watchmen.
