Tourism Advocate – Phil Roberts Calls for Inclusion of Tourism Volunteers Network (TVN) in Tinubu’s Local Government Autonomy Committee.
As Nigeria prepares to implement local government autonomy, Ambassador Phil Roberts, Executive Director of the Tourism Volunteers Network (TVN), is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to include members of Tourism Volunteers Network TVN in the local government committees responsible for community tourism promotion and enforcement.
Roberts emphasized that local governments are designed to bring governance closer to the grassroots, facilitating development and enhancing accountability.
“In Nigeria, ongoing local government reforms are aimed at accelerating development and empowering local communities to take an active role in governance. Local autonomy allows local authorities to manage public affairs more effectively, thereby enabling central authorities to focus on broader national issues. With a membership exceeding 8,000 individuals across all local government areas in Nigeria, the Tourism Volunteers Network is uniquely positioned to support the government’s efforts in promoting tourism at the grassroots level.”
Roberts highlighted the critical role that community tourism initiatives play in developing local economies, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural development, and empowering local communities to participate in governance actively. Local autonomy empowers local authorities to manage public affairs more effectively, relieving the central government of local issues and enabling it to concentrate on broader national concerns.
