Why He Killed His Wife
The couple recently married around 2019. However, the dowry of the marriage was not paid then but the couple went on with the marriage anyway with the hope that the dowry will be paid at a later date.
But from the beginning of 2020, the husband started to harass the wife about the dowry. He reportedly threatened her with many things which her family is aware of.
Recall that in Indian culture, it is the bride that pays for dowry, else there will be no marriage. But in the case of Kumar and Uthara, they had an understanding that the wife or her family will pay the dowry after marriage. But it became a problem when the money was not paid on time. The husband then decided to kill her.
Suraj then hatched a plan with Suresh who supplied him a viper snake to use for the murder.
How He Killed Her With Cobra Snake
On the 2nd March 2020, Suraj approached Suresh, his accomplice, on how to kill his wife without drawing suspicion to himself. They then concluded that it has to be through a snakebite method. Suraj then brought Russell’s Viper snake to the house that later bites the wife to death..
However, the wife survived it. Reports have it then that the wife was quickly rushed to the hospital where she was given the anti-venom to the snake bite. Her saving grace was that the incident happened in the daytime. So she quickly got help from friends, family, and neighbors.
But the killer’s husband then re- strategizes in the second attempt. By the second attempt, the husband, Suraj, used a deadlier snake, Cobra. Among venomous snakes, the cobra is one of the deadliest because its venom kills faster than most other species.
So on the night of the incident, it was reported that the husband made sure his wife was sleeping and he released the snake on her by using some method that will make the snake bite her. The next morning, he quickly rushed out pretending to have an urgent matter to seek outside.
Suraj and Suresh
Utharas s family went in and saw the lifeless body of their daughter. By then the snake was still in the room. They killed the snake. However, they protested that it could not have been a coincidence that another snake bites their daughter again within weeks apart. This led to a serious investigation that implicated the husband.
The judgment
A court in Kollam district held Kumar guilty of murder for poisoning his wife and for making an earlier attempt to kill her by using Russell’s viper.
Before delivering the judgment, India’s Supreme Court quickly warned about a trend of snake-bite murders. The Court said it denied bail to a woman and her lover accused of using a cobra to kill her mother-in-law in the northern state of Rajasthan in 2019. The
The prosecutor said the court was presented with a test that showed the difference between natural and induced bite marks. The case of Kumar is an induced snakebite caused by the husband, hence he was sentenced to double life imprisonment.
The Judge also opined that the suspect is still young and that is the only reason why he did not give him the death sentence. The judge believes he has had some time to turn a new leaf of life in prison with the hope that one day he might gain his freedom and be a better person.

However, the mother of the deceased wife is seeking an appeal of the judgment. Even though most people involved in the matter are satisfied with the sentence, the mother insisted that she will appeal the judgment because the killer of her daughter deserves to die for killing her daughter.
No amount of compression by the judge should derail the course of justice for her daughter. ” He that kills must be killed”, she said. Meanwhile, the late Uthara is survived by her one-year-old son who is now in the care of the grandmother.
