Zimbabwe’s first post-independent leader, Robert Mugabe, has died at the age of 95 in Singapore where he was seeking treatment.
Announcing the death of Mugabe on Friday, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Comrade Robert Mugabe.
“Comrade Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 at Kutama Mission Village in Southern Rhodesia’s Zvimba District. He was one of six children of his parents.
