After Illegal Detention, Peter Obi’s Young Supporter Quadri Yusuf Seeks N100M in Damages.
Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the 17-year-old who gained national fame during the 2023 general elections for standing fearlessly in front of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy, has been released from detention after months of being held on false armed robbery charges.
Alabi was discharged by Magistrate A. O. Olorunfemi at the Apapa Magistrate Court on Thursday following a legal review by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Babajide Martins, which confirmed no evidence linked him to the alleged crime.

According to human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented Alabi, the teenager was unlawfully arrested in January 2025. Effiong disclosed that two individuals—identified as “Lege” and “Baba Waris,” reportedly members of a local street enforcement group (“Area Boys”) in Amukoko, Lagos—were behind the false accusation. Their motive? Jealousy over the fame and financial donations Alabi received after his viral moment in 2023.

Effiong further revealed that Alabi’s family had faced relentless pressure since his rise to prominence. Local thugs and even the Baale (community leader) allegedly demanded a share of the donations meant for the boy. At one point, the Baale reportedly pressured Alabi’s mother to host a feast for the community youths, including purchasing a cow and food, as a form of appeasement.

Now free, Alabi is seeking N100 million in compensation for his unlawful detention and the trauma he endured.
