Army Confirms Death of Officer Lieutenant Haruna; Condemns Alleged Killing by Wife.
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a medical officer, who passed away from severe burns sustained in a domestic incident allegedly involving his wife at their home inside a military barracks in Akwa Ibom State.

The 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in a statement issued on Tuesday, condemned the act that led to the death of the Regimental Medical Officer of 6 Battalion. The incident, which occurred on September 22, 2025, at the Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, has sent shockwaves through the military community.
According to a statement signed by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lawal Muhammad, the tragedy unfolded after a “heated argument between the couple, reportedly stemming from a family crisis.”
The situation escalated dramatically when the officer’s wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna, allegedly set properties within the house on fire. Lieutenant Haruna was reportedly caught in the ensuing inferno, sustaining life-threatening burns.

“Haruna sustained severe burns, but was initially stabilised at the Battalion Medical Facility, and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further treatment, where he unfortunately passed away early hours of Tuesday,” the army’s statement revealed.

The military high command expressed its profound sorrow and condemnation over the incident. “The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna,” the statement read.

In the wake of the officer’s death, the army has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing issues of domestic conflict within its ranks. The statement outlined the force’s intention to “continue to advocate healthy relationships, address domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within families and communities.”
The case is now under a formal investigation by the military police. The army has called for calm and patience from all parties involved, including family members and colleagues of the deceased, as they await the outcome of the official probe to determine the full circumstances surrounding the devastating event.
