CBN Bows To Pressure, Extends Deadline For Old Naira Notes.
A few days before the deadline issued by the CBN for the collection of the new naira note and exchange of the old notes, a new date has been announced by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele shortly after allegedly meeting with the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
Before now, the CBN had made it clear that banks in the country would no longer collect old naira notes from individuals after its deadline, January 31.
Also in a later statement, the CBN directed banks to work on Sundays. It statement reads ” We believe that using the ATM will people equal opportunity to have access to the new notes. We are also able to track the volume of disbursement that is done through the ATM because of the log on it.
” In Katsina, there are over 750 registered agents who are tied to three banks. We disbursed N120 million to these banks to issue to these agents. Each agent is expected to receive N500, 000 per week to disburse in their communities. We have been monitoring the agents around here to ensure that they do the needful with the new notes issued to them. We are riding on the back of the agents to help those from far distances and communities without banks or ATMs to receive the new notes. “
