The late former President Muhammadu Buhari was finally buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, as thousands of mourners gathered to witness the historic event. The burial, conducted in accordance with Islamic rites, was marked by an outpouring of grief and solemn tributes from dignitaries and ordinary Nigerians alike.


The burial ceremony drew an overwhelming crowd, with residents and visitors flooding the streets of Daura to pay their last respects. So many people turned up that some resorted to climbing trees and rooftops just to witness the proceedings. The sheer number of attendees underscored Buhari’s deep connection with the people, particularly in his home state of Katsina.

In honor of the late former leader, the Federal Government declared a seven-day mourning period, with flags flown at half-mast across the country. Additionally, a one-day public holiday was announced to allow Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s legacy and contributions to the nation.

The janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) for the former president was held at 4:50 PM, after which his body was laid to rest. His remains had earlier been transported from London to Katsina via a Nigerian Air Force jet, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials.


President Bola Tinubu, alongside First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, attended the burial. A delegation from the Republic of Niger was also present, reflecting Buhari’s influence in regional diplomacy. Security was tight, with armored vehicles, DSS operatives, and heavily armed soldiers deployed across key routes in Daura to ensure order.


The burial marked the end of an era for Nigeria, as citizens and leaders alike bid farewell to a man who played a significant role in the nation’s history.
